I challenge you to create your own puzzle on the website www.jigsawplanet.com, using a satilite picture of your favourite planet, so we can share and play at the end on the next class!

Follow up activity on "Create your own Solar System"

Good Evening space travellers!
For the next class, each group should print out this poster template and some picture you took during the experiment last week.
This way, during class, you will fill in your poster with the experiment's predictions, process and outcomes.
If you rather be a little more creative, use the website www.glogster.com and create your own poster. However, every poster must have the same type and amount of information.

The Solar System - Flipped Class with the theory for the Science Fair!

A Flipped-classroom activity, focusing on the topic The Solar System for 4th graders – this class would follow the webquest and continue the study of the solar system. This class would come as a preparation for the science fair, where the class would work on a detailed model of the solar system with a presentation of each planet.

Start by watching the following videos:

  • This video is a flipped classroom video where a teacher presents the 8 planets in the universe.

  • Experiment on how the solar system was formed – we will discuss it and do it in class, no need to bring any material.

  • This video contains more detailed information about the solar system and each planet


Here you will find summarized some of the information that are on the videos 


Think of which planet you would like to do your project on and why, make sure you know the position the planet you chosen occupies in the solar system.

(To self-assess and test their knowledge about the solar system, the students would have to complete the following Quizzes)

In class:

We will discuss the results of both quizzes, questions and wrong answers, (make sure you record your wrong answers). We will also choose workgroups to create detailed models of each planet. Each group is going to present one planet on the science fair. The models must represent the type of planet and how its surface is: rocky, volcanic, icy... we will continue on the next classes with experiments that will help us build an accurate model.
We will also do the experiment you have seen on the second video and understand a little bit more about the interaction of the planets with the sun. Do your own research if you want to get ahead on the experiment and get extra credit, key words: gravity, orbit, force.

Assessment:
1.       Completes both quizzes and participates actively on the discussion in class
2.       Is able to answer questions orally showing understanding of the content on the videos
3.       Chooses a planet to work on and is able to explain what interests him or her in it, and its position on the solar system.
4.       Is able to predict what is going to happen on the experiment showing that had seen the video

5.       Extra credit: is able to explain roughly why planets orbit around the sun.

The solar System for 4th Graders - WebQuest






The solar system is so fascinating!
Last week we had a great trip to the Planetarium in Madrid and we left feeling smaller than ever.
The universe is big and mysterious...a great setting for some adventure stories!








During our trip, we had the opportunity to review the name and order of the planets, but we also learned some new things:

  • The sun makes up more than 99% of the solar system's mass...we also learned a bit about what mass is.
  • Mercury is named after the Roman Messenger to the Gods.
  • Venus spins in the opposite direction than most planets.

We also learned about constelations and so much more...
Now it's time to start a fun WebQuest about the solar system!

Get ready to become a writer of space adventures!
